Evaporative Cooling Systems

Various civilisations throughout the ages have found ingenious ways to combat the heat in their region. From the Persian ‘wind- catcher,’ which channelled air through shafts on the roofs of mud huts, to early forms of evaporative cooling where air was vented through wet tent doors or across porous pots, these have formed the base methods of air cooling processes today.

Evaporative cooling has gained a great deal of respect in recent years as the industrial community rediscovers the benefits of natural systems. In essence it is all about using a natural resource, namely water, to reduce the overall high temperatures within buildings by passing fresh warm ambient air over a wet filter pad thus cooling it by the evaporation process.

Sometimes good ventilation alone is not enough to combat the cumulative effects of overheating in a factory as a result solar gain, plant heat, people, lighting etc. PremiAir can solve these problems by the use of evaporative cooling in large industrial spaces and bring down internal temperatures to comfort levels.

The amount of cooling is solely dependent on the external air conditions prevailing at any one time. As the table shows, typically in the UK, the external air could be as high as 25oC at 40% relative humidity. This external air condition would provide for a 6.5oC drop in the leaving air temperature from ambient i.e. leaving air temperature 18.5oC. The actual temperature inside a factory with solar and process heat gains could be much higher, at say 35oC, therefore the actual difference is not just 6.5oC but a lot cooler.

Modern evaporative cooling systems are ideal for large factory or work spaces as they are both economical to purchase and cost effective to operate.

Provision of good thermal comfort in the work place provides for the obvious benefits of improved staff morale, increased productivity, reduction in absenteeism and lowers the risk of industrial accidents.

Evaporative cooling has the following additional benefits compared to traditional air conditioning:

• Environmentally safe, friendly solution - evaporation is a natural process and requires no refrigerants.

• Eliminates odours and stale air instead of re-circulating them.

• Money saving - running costs up to 90% less than an equivalent refrigeration system for the same kW’s of cooling.

• Doors and windows can be opened with a beneficial effect on the overall efficiency of the system, reducing operating costs.

• Saves up to 10,000kg of carbon per year compared to an equivalent air conditioning system.

• Provides a natural environment and improves air quality.

Finally and in summary, Air Conditioning cools by blowing re-circulated air across a refrigerant filled coil, changing the state of that refrigerant mechanically in a compressor and then rejecting the heat to outside (because the compression of the refrigerant requires a lot of energy, electricity costs are on average 4 to 5 times higher than Evaporative Cooling on the hottest summer days). On days when it‘s hot inside and cooler outside, Air Conditioning still has to compress refrigerant, while Evaporative Cooling can provide free cooling. This increases the running cost difference even more.
